Labor to make HIV history with $53 million commitment to end new transmissions

Labor to make HIV history with $53 million commitment to end new transmissions | Health, HIV & Addiction Topics in the LGBTQ+ Community | Scoop.it

If Labor wins the next federal election Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has committed $53 million to step up the fight against HIV. The commitment will include $3.6 million a year to support all states and territories in offering pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to another 17,500 Australians until it is listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) and subsidised.

Matt Skallerud's insight:

It will also provide $10 million a year to renew Australia’s HIV response by restoring the funding and capacity that the current government has cut from HIV organisations, including the Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations and Scarlet Alliance.
The funding package will also allocate $3 million a year to target ‘hidden populations’, including people that aren’t diagnosed with or currently being treated for HIV, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

World First App For Those Living With HIV Shines Light On Progress | Health, HIV & Addiction Topics in the LGBTQ+ Community | Scoop.it

The launch of MyLife+, the world’s first comprehensive health and wellness phone app specifically designed for people living with HIV, has served to highlight the immense progress made both medically and socially in the field of HIV/AIDS, just ahead of World AIDS Day on the 1st of December.

Matt Skallerud's insight:

Developed by ViiV Healthcare, in consultation with the HIV community, and in partnership with the National Association of People with HIV Australia (NAPWHA), MyLife+ helps people with HIV track their medications, blood results — including CD4 count and viral load — symptoms, and even moods. Hoping to scope the impact the app could have on those living with HIV, SameSame spoke to two HIV+ men with very different stories to tell.

Data out earlier this month showed the huge success of HIV prevention programmes in London, with new diagnoses declining by 29 per cent last year in gay and bisexual men. Since 2015, Do It London has been promoting HIV testing and safer sex. Its latest campaign moves the conversation on to focus on treatment as prevention, and includes PrEP – which stands for pre-exposure prophylaxis – a pill that can prevent you from getting HIV.

The Uncertain Future of HIV Treatment After the Affordable Care Act

The Uncertain Future of HIV Treatment After the Affordable Care Act | Health, HIV & Addiction Topics in the LGBTQ+ Community | Scoop.it

With early access to antiretroviral therapy, research suggests life expectancy for people who are HIV-positive is approaching parity with people that are HIV negative. Apart from the imminent healthcare shift, barriers like geographical location, cultural stigma and lack of information are preventing people receiving the testing and treatment they need. All over the country, nonprofits and community centers exist to do HIV awareness and counseling work where federally funded campaigns fail. Now, however, the burden may fall on them for prevention efforts.

Evidence Brief on European PrEP Usage

Evidence Brief on European PrEP Usage | Health, HIV & Addiction Topics in the LGBTQ+ Community | Scoop.it

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is the use of an antiretroviral medication to prevent the acquisition of HIV infection by people who are uninfected. In April 2016, the European Centre for Diseases Prevention and Control (ECDC) held a meeting to discuss considerations for PrEP implementation in Europe. In preparation for this meeting, ECDC and the Hornet Gay Social Network collaborated on a rapid survey about PrEP use among men who have sex with men (MSM). The objective of this survey was to examine PrEP use among MSM, including access, health care engagement and likelihood of future use.
