A Jacksonville organization for young LGBT residents is hoping a new grant will help prevent the spread of HIV among the city’s most susceptible residents.
Despite recommendation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and studies that indicate that PrEP can reduce HIV transmission by 96 and up to 99 percent, there are still relatively few gay and bisexual men on the drug.
Matt Skallerud's insight:
It can be hard to find anyone among your friends to ask about it. And what makes a person decide they want to go on the once-daily pill varies a lot. The Advocate reached out to gay and bi men, as well as serodiscordant couples, who use the drug to hear their reasons. They offered advice for those on the fence about it. Read their stories in their own words.
The number of syphilis cases has more than tripled over the last five years in Erie County, New York — home to Buffalo — and local health officials are pointing their collective finger squarely at gay dating apps.
rudential Financial Inc. said it will make life insurance coverage available to people living with HIV, becoming the first major insurer to do so, according to California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced some deeply disconcerting news on Tuesday: Sexually transmitted infection rates have skyrocketed over the last year, particularly among gay and bisexual men. Syphilis transmission rates are especially alarming: The CDC reports a 15.1 percent increase in new infections nationwide since 2013, with a stunning 83 percent of male cases affecting men who have sex with men.
Guys on Grindr and Scruff — two of the most popular gay hookup apps — recently started seeing profiles advertising the use of pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last year recommended for gay and bisexual men at substantial risk for contracting HIV
I’d like to point out that there is no scientific evidence saying that just using the apps Tinder or Grindr will cause an STD. However, what happens after using those apps as partially intended may.
Matt Skallerud's insight:
The site FreeSTDCheck.org and AIDS Health Foundation is leveraging the popularity of these dating apps to get the word out about getting yourself checked out for a sexually transmitted disease.
Healthy gay men should be offered drugs which are normally used to treat HIV in order to prevent infection, say UK Medical Research Council scientists.
Join mPOWR and help tailor health apps to the unique needs of key populations vulnerable to HIV infection, mental illness, and addiction.
Matt Skallerud's insight:
Key populations – e.g., people who use drugs (PWUD), men who have sex with men (MSM), transgender persons, and sex workers face disproportionate health inequalities as a result of discrimination, stigma, and a lack of information about how personality shapes long-term health. Because data related to sexuality or HIV status is not collected in most studies, critical information about disease risk factors (e.g., drug use), healthy activities (e.g., exercise), and unique cognitive strengths (e.g., resilience in the face of crises) remains unknown.
With your help, the mPOWR team can begin to unravel the multifaceted ways in which personalities can influence positive health outcomes.
MSMGF is proud to announce, together with the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), the launch of a Global Platform to achieve ambitious global HIV and human rights targets among gay and bisexual men and other men who have sex with men. The Platform is a response to accelerated targets set by UNAIDS for the global HIV response, the “Fast-Track strategy” to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030. Through the Platform, members will provide strategic advice to United Nations agencies, major donors, and other stakeholders on HIV program needs and priorities for gay and bisexual men and other men who have sex with men. In all its work, the Platform seeks to “re-center” the global response to HIV around unabated and disproportionate HIV incidence and prevalence in this population worldwide.

Your Snapchat selfie may actually do some good on Tuesday. Bono’s AIDS-fighting organization (RED) is partnering with Snapchat to offer three special photo filters on World AIDS Day Tuesday, an international effort to show support for people with HIV and raise money for organizations fighting AIDS.
Matt Skallerud's insight:
The filters themselves are nothing new — Snapchat has offered photo filters of all kinds for months — but these (RED) filters can actually do some good. Every time a user sends a Snap with a (RED) filter, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will donate $3 to the organization’s fight against AIDS.

With HIV infection rates up by 132.5 percent among young gay and bisexual men, it has never been more evident that conversations about HIV among young people are painfully needed. And the best way for these discussions to begin is by empowering newly HIV-positive folks to use their voices to bring awareness to the communities they occupy. This, however, is easier said than done for many people living with the virus due to the fear of being stigmatized for being HIV-positive by their family and friends. In order to foster an environment where people living with HIV feel comfortable talking about their experiences, here is a list of things you should never say to someone with HIV, and some helpful alternatives you may want to ask.
Sex is never the real danger and neither are apps. Shame and ignorance are. Apps present an opportunity to change the way we have sex, and as soon as we learn to harness their incredible power, we'll all be a lot safer.
Following up on the panel discussion in 2014 at NLGJA, we have a group of reporters and editors in HIV/AIDS media to discuss how to increase the quality and volume of coverage on these issues in LGBT and AIDS-specific journalism projects.
Social networking sites may facilitate the spread of sexually transmitted disease, but these sites also serve as effective education and prevention tools.
