The learning record store (LRS) is now becoming an essential part of corporate learning. Why is this new tech so important?

Often the best way to learn about a subject is to jump in feet-first. xAPI, a standard for gathering data in experiences including learning, is no exception. A first prototype project is the route many new-to-xAPI learning experience designers use to get started. There are many reasons to choose this route: to build an initial xAPI project as a learning experience; to test the waters; or to convince others at the organization to come on board.

As a learning professional, what does your job require you to support, document, record, and track? There is formal, structured learning for which you are held accountable (certifications, continuing professional education, required or mandatory training). And there is informal, unstructured experience (coaching, suggested reading, on-the-job-training) that supports employee satisfaction, career advancement, and individual success. Formal learning and informal or social learning are important in order for your organization to have success as an enterprise or activity.

As xAPI gains adoption in the industry, more and more course authoring tools offer a degree of xAPI support. eLearning is often, logically, the first place instructional designers encounter xAPI because we already have the built-in support at our disposal, and we’re keenly interested in learning more about what learners are actually doing in our courses!

But the fun doesn’t stop there.

A potentially game-changing technology for L&D teams, xAPI holds out the promise of gathering and using more complete data on learning activity and its impact than has ever been possible before.

Earlier this month, the sold-out London xAPI Barcamp packed the reserved meeting space of the Britannia Pub in Kensington with almost 60 people. The list of speakers participating in the Barcamp was a veritable who’s who in xAPI today. It was kind of like speed dating for xAPI, and it worked!
