The article discusses the new social media platform Ello, and how it is being said to be the “anti-Facebook”. The way it works that makes it different from Facebook is that there are zero advertisements, is invite only, and those who are allowed to become members do not have to use their own name. The platform is a way for artistic individuals to express their ideas and opinions without the worry of what people will think of them, because they can be anonymous. It is also freely open for the LGTBQ community, and encouraged. Brands are allowed to create pages (when invited and accepted), but instead of advertising, need to come up with ways to communicate effectively to the members without selling something. Critics are concerned with this new platform, with some thinking it is more of a joke than anything and it will not last much longer. This is due to the fact that more and more consumers are accepting the social media ads as long as they are targeted and would be something they are interested in.
I personally think that the idea is interesting, I just don’t know if it would work for the long haul. I know, from my last post, that Facebook is creating a way for its users to discuss topics openly while keeping their names private. If Facebook can successfully accomplish that, they I don’t think Ello has a shot at making it. Especially because they are so small, and other social media sites are so large. The article mentioned that they are only seven guys in an office. I don’t think they have the capacity to accept a large number of users, especially the amount of users that Facebook has. They would have to grow substantially and install a number of firewalls to be able to compete with any of the other social media platforms. |
