THE COMMONS, STATE POWER AND NEW POLITICAL MOVEMENTS

THE COMMONS, STATE POWER AND NEW POLITICAL MOVEMENTS | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
The Market/State is in crisis and representative democracy seems to be broken. Many argue, that both problems need to be adressed for the sake of social coherence and security. We think, that adressing them properly implies rethinking the core ideas state power and representative democracy are based upon. After all, there is nothing in the current institutional arrangment or in the system of representation through political parties defending the commons: nor as a special type of institutions, nor as a world-view, nor as a plethora of social practices.

What exactly is going on in Iceland?

What exactly is going on in Iceland? | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The answer to the question is a surprisingly complicated and contested one. This all began with revelations about links between government ministers and offshore companies in so-called tax havens or tax shelters. On Sunday evening media outlets across the world, including RUV and Reykjavík Media, published documentation that linked these offshore accounts to prime minister Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson, his wife, finance minister Bjarni Benediktsson and interior minister Ólöf Nordal

Occupy Black Lives: Notes on Two Movements

Occupy Black Lives: Notes on Two Movements | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

1. The most important thing we learned from the constructive failure of Occupy Wall Street is that social movements are born when two things happen. One, when there is a new tactic that arises that unlocks the people’s collective hope and imagination. And two, when a new kind of mood spreads throughout society. For example, during the Arab Spring, a Tunisian fruit seller set himself on fire, triggering a mood of fearlessness that spread all over the world. People were no longer afraid of the authorities or of losing their jobs and rushed into the streets to protest. And at the same time, with Occupy Wall Street, we gave the people a new tactic which was the combination of the acampadas with the Tahrir Uprising: let’s go into the financial districts and set up consensus-based assemblies. The combination of these two ingredients is the formula for social movement creation.

Phoenix Generation - P2P Foundation

Phoenix Generation - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The Phoenix Generation will actualize upon this planet in accordance with generational, evolutionary trends – giving rise to a new form of consciousness. This new wave of consciousness will then gradually seep into the core of all our future societies. Our responsibility now is to fully engage and be a part of the human becoming that we truly wish to see in the world. This requires that we spearhead the transition at hand and that we show, through our behaviour, the new models for change. We have the opportunity, and capacity, to do this for ourselves and, more importantly, for those to come – and this shall be our true legacy." Is Bernie Sanders the Most Pro-Market Candidate? - Evonomics

Is Bernie Sanders the Most Pro-Market Candidate? - Evonomics | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

"This is where Bernie Sanders comes into play. You may not subscribe to many of Sanders’s ideas—particularly, those on limiting trade. But one thing is certain: he is really beginning a political and economical revolution. According to our research, Sanders is the only candidate in this race, and actually in the last few decades, who is not taking money from special interest groups. Sanders managed through grassroots movements to raise close to 100 million dollars from the “dispersed public”: that is, taxpayers, consumers, and investors that usually cannot organize and get representation in democracy because they are a large, heterogeneous group that cannot overcome the free rider problem. Sanders is defeating the model that has ruled politics for many years."
