Capitalism in the Web of Life | Review by Shane Hopkinson - | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Jason Moore is a key figure in the World-Ecology Research Network and has produced a text that is required reading. It is a challenging read which assumes the reader is familiar with Marx’s critique of political economy but Moore and his co-thinkers seek to bring nature to the centre of historical change and a dialectical understanding of capitalism to the heart of the analysis.

Debates in Nineteenth-Century European Philosophy

Debates in Nineteenth-Century European Philosophy | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Debates in Nineteenth-Century European Philosophy offers an engaging and in-depth introduction to the philosophical questions raised by this rich and far reaching period in the history of philosophy. Throughout thirty chapters (organized into fifteen sections), the volume surveys the intellectual contributions of European philosophy in the nineteenth century, but it also engages the on-going debates about how these contributions can and should be understood. As such, the volume provides both an overview of nineteenth-century European philosophy and an introduction to contemporary scholarship in this field.

What Books Could Be Used to Rebuild Civilization?: Lists by Brian Eno, Stewart Brand, Kevin Kelly & Other Forward-Thinking Minds

What Books Could Be Used to Rebuild Civilization?: Lists by Brian Eno, Stewart Brand, Kevin Kelly & Other Forward-Thinking Minds | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
One particularly distressing hallmark of late modernity can be characterized as a cultural loss of the future.
Lee SCHLENKER's curator insight, February 20, 2015 6:52 AM

As the Long Now Foundation co-founder Stewart Brand describes it, “civilization is revving itself into a pathologically short attention span,” driven by “the acceleration of technology, the short-horizon perspective of market-driven economics, the next-election perspective of democracies, or the distractions of personal multi-tasking.”

12/21 - Polarization, Conversation, and Collective Intelligence - Integral Leadership Review

12/21 - Polarization, Conversation, and Collective Intelligence - Integral Leadership Review | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Polarization is rooted in dichotomous thinking – binary, oppositional, polarized perspectives that have been with us for thousands of years.  The problems and insights presented by dichotomous thinking have been long recognized, along with transpolarizing perspectives that provide us with positive ways to appreciate dichotomy and deal with it and the false choices it often seems to present.

Ecosophy: Nature’s Guide to a Better World

Ecosophy: Nature’s Guide to a Better World | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The most exciting and beneficial things I believe happened to humanity in the past century were physicists’ recognition that “the universe is more like a great thought than like a great machine”1 and astronauts lifting far enough from Earth to see, feel and show us how very much alive our planet is. Those events led to a wonderful sea change from the older—and rather depressing—scientific story of a non-living material universe accidentally giving rise to all within it, devoid of meaning or purpose.

The Relevance of Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy

The Relevance of Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

"Obscure" hardly begins to describe the obscurity of the German-American thinker Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy (1888¯1973). Though never a household name, he was admired during his lifetime by W.H. Auden, who wrote a foreword to one of Rosenstock-Huessy’s books; Lewis Mumford; Harvey Cox; and Walter Ong. Before he left Germany in 1933, his intellectual circle included such prominent Jewish thinkers as Martin Buber and Franz Rosenzweig; Karl Barth was part of the so-called Patmos Group, of which Rosenstock-Huessy was a prominent member.

A Project for a New Humanism: an interview with Pierre Lévy about IEML

A Project for a New Humanism: an interview with Pierre Lévy about IEML | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Pierre Lévy is a philosopher and a pioneer in the study of the impact of the Internet on human knowledge and culture. In Collective Intelligence. Mankind’s Emerging World in Cyberspace, published in French in 1994 (English translation in 1999), he describes a kind of collective intelligence that extends everywhere and is constantly evaluated and coordinated in real time, a collective human intelligence, augmented by new information technologies and the Internet. Since then, he has been working on a major undertaking: the creation of IEML (Information Economy Meta Language), a tool for the augmentation of collective intelligence by means of the algorithmic medium. IEML, which already has its own grammar, is a metalanguage that includes the semantic dimension, making it computable. This in turn allows a reflexive representation of collective intelligence processes.

Francis Fukuyama: ‘In recently democratised countries I’m still a rock star’

Francis Fukuyama: ‘In recently democratised countries I’m still a rock star’ | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
he first volume of Francis Fukuyama’s history of political development has been one of only a handful of books by a foreigner to make a profit in China. As Fukuyama explains when we meet near his home in Palo Alto, California, foreign books in China are usually pirated. But The Origins of Political Order, which narrates the emergence and growth of the state “From Pre-Human Times to the French Revolution”, engages respectfully with Chinese history and culture, and features an overarching version of national history that the Chinese themselves no longer teach or learn. Enough of his account of the country’s enormous historic strengths and equally enormous historic weaknesses survived the censor’s scalpel to make the work valuable to the Chinese reading public.
