Paul Chiusano: The failed economics of our software commons, and what you can about it right now

Progress in the software industry has been crushed under the weight of technical debt accumulated over the last 40 years. The tools, languages, libraries, and platforms we all rely on suffer from massive incidental complexities responsible for billions of dollars in wasted productivity. Anyone who spends any amount of time as a developer and loses days, weeks, or months implementing some library that “should” exist or working around some shitty software tech to implement a task that “should be simple” knows, deep down, that this can’t be the best humans are capable of. It’s not that we don’t know any better. Given more time and resources that could be devoted to tasks other than shipping the next release, most programmers at least have ideas for how to do things better. But we never seem to get these resources because of the failed economics of our software commons. I’ll explain the problem and tell you can what you can do right now to start changing the game. (Spoiler: check out snowdrift.coop, and after you’re convinced what a great idea it is go fund their launch.)

Businesses for the Commons Project - P2P Foundation

Businesses for the Commons Project - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

"The «businesses for the commons» project is based on a logic of social inclusion, reached by an institutional strategy focused on the creation of a network of partnerships between administrators, citizens and businesses. An innovative paradigm which finds its reference in the Italian constitution where, at the fourth comma of article 118, horizontal subsidiarity is expressed; according to such possibility citizens have available precious means to care about overall interest through improving and defending commons. In this framework the culture, a fundamental equally material and immaterial common, is considered as the core for the establishment of a social partnership which make the cultural heritage a driving force in the development, both economic and social, of the Italian city of Mantua. The final objective is to revitalize the cultural heritage of the territory of Mantua by improving social innovation and creativity, and establishing a governance lab which aims to sustain experimentations of shared ideas for the renovation of cultural commons. Through the “businesses for the commons” Lab, will be tested in practice the activities of shared care of the cultural heritage. Project activities require testing of living lab and fab lab, creation of an incubator for cultural enterprises and cooperative placemaking’s experimentation." Production and Governance in Hackerspaces as Commons-Based Peer Production in the Physical Realm? - P2P Foundation

Production and Governance in Hackerspaces as Commons-Based Peer Production in the Physical Realm? - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

This article deals with the phenomenon of hackerspaces and sheds light on the relationship of their underlying values, organizational structures and productive processes to those of the online communities of Commons-based peer production projects. While hackerspaces adopt hybrid modes of governance, this paper attempts to identify patterns, trends and theory that can frame their production and governance mechanisms. Using a diverse amount of literature and case studies, it is argued that, in many cases, hackerspaces exemplify several aspects of peer production projects’ principles and governance mechanisms.

Case of a RepRap-Based, Lego-Built 3D Printing-Milling Machine - P2P Foundation

Case of a RepRap-Based, Lego-Built 3D Printing-Milling Machine - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

This essay set out to show, through the case of the RepRap-based, Lego-built 3D printing-milling machine, two points: First, on a theoretical level, that modularity, not only in terms of development process but also of hardware components, can catalyze CBPP’s replication for tangible products enabling social experimentation, learning and innovation. Second, that the synergy of a globally accessible knowledge Commons as well as of the CBPP practices with digital fabrication technologies, which are advancing and becoming more and more accessible, can arguably offer the ability to think globally and produce locally.

“The IBM move is meant to encourage other patent holders to donate their own intellectual property in order to form what the company refers to as a "patent commons," a modern twist on shared public lands set aside under traditional laws." (http://www.wired.com/news/business/0,1367,66237,00.html?)

Common Good - P2P Foundation

Common Good - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

"The common good is a term that can refer to several different concepts. In the popular meaning, the common good describes a specific "good" that is shared and beneficial for all (or most) members of a given community. This is also how the common good is broadly defined in philosophy, ethics, and political science. This concept is increasing in popularity as moral vision for the progressive left in American politics."
