How 3D Printing is rooted in the history of the progressive and democratic Arts and Crafts Movement | P2P Foundation

How 3D Printing is rooted in the history of the progressive and democratic Arts and Crafts Movement | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

In this thesis I am going to study the ideas of the Arts and Crafts Movement. More specifically I will study its ideas of the democratization of art, and attempt to point out similarities and differences that are apparent in the newly emerging 3D printing scene.

Project of the Day: Atadiat - Bringing Open Source Hardware to Syria | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Just few weeks ago, I’ve been informed for the first time about the existence of an Open Source Hardware Startup called Atadiat, operating in Syria. I stumbled upon the news since a friend shared a tweet mentioning the Shamduino board (an Arduino inspired board) and the fact that the board was basically made out of locally sourced materials. I basically reacted enthusiastically since – as you probably know if you’ve read some of the opeds here on the OPen Electronics blog – I’m strongly interested also in the impacts that open source hardware must and could have towards manufacturing and relocalization of productions also in terms of materials and supply chain in general.

P2P Foundation » Blog Archive » The Industrial Internet Consortium

“The natural successor to the Industrial and Internet Revolutions, the Industrial Internet will completely transform the way that we live and work. Intelligent machines enable optimization, leading to better performance, lower costs and higher reliability. Check the scenarios to learn more about how the Industrial Internet can be applied in different industries. The Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC) manages the collaborative efforts of industry, academia, and government to accelerate growth of the Industrial Internet. This not-for-profit Consortium provides the forum to catalyze, coordinate, and manage the collaborative program..”

Four challenges for the Open Source Spaceflight Hardware Movement

“Discussion of open source spaceflight hardware groups reveals a number of repeated challenges facing this movement. These challenges include licensing open source hardware, the development of web-based project management tools for engineering, overcoming the costs associated with engineering software, and resolving the conflict between open source methods and export restrictions on spaceflight hardware. The good news for the open source spaceflight organizations is that they are not alone in addressing some of these challenges, which provides for important opportunities.

Research: 3D printing, the Arts and Crafts Movement and the Democratization of Art | P2P Foundation

Research: 3D printing, the Arts and Crafts Movement and the Democratization of Art | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
The Arts and Crafts Movement of late 19th century England professed to democratize art and the production wares. The most prominent character of the Movement was poet, craftsman and socialist William Morris. I claim that today open source philosophy and peer production combined with 3D printing technology represents a similar philosophy about the democratization of production as the 19th century Arts and Crafts Movement. 3D printing is a nascent technology which allows the physical rendering (prototyping) of computer models. As The Arts and Crafts Movement was opposed to machines, I try to ascertain to what extent the Movement’s opposition toward the machine extends and what it is based on. Therefore, I discuss the machine’s two-sided role as, on the one hand, the destroyer of art, and on the other hand, the saviour of art.

Matter, Makers , Microbiomes and Generation M

“1. Language, information and the virtual space were distinctive features of the previous generation. Craft, matter and the fusion of the digital and the material are defining generation M, the first generation of the 21st century.

Liberating Ourselves Locally: towards federations of DIY Communities

Liberating Ourselves Locally: towards federations of DIY Communities | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

“There is something truly exciting about the interconnections between subcultures and the value of their hybridization in the spirit of creativity. What happens, for instance, when you combine botany buffs and hackers? You might get something like BioBridge, the amorphous DIYbio contingent of Noisebridgers, working on experiments in oyster mushroom growing and developing Arduino-controlled sensors for monitoring temperature and pH levels in kombucha brews and sourdough starters. Here you would also find overlap with Tastebridge’s Vegan Hackers night and perhaps some friendly Food Not Bombs volunteers.
