In the late Nineteenth Century, human curiosity turned inward, to the smallest of particles: the atom.  Scientists deduced general principles about the physical world from the behavior of the atom’s composite parts, the nucleus and the electrons surrounding it.  The nucleus was nearly indecipherable, and nuclear science, an entire complex discipline, is named for it.  Electrons were easier to manipulate in the laboratory. They were the dopey dog that could be trained to do tricks.
