It’s simply a case of parenting gone horribly wrong. I have five children, and I’m always trying to get them excited about science and technology and it’s hard. It’s video games versus test tubes, and video games tend to win. At Wired we were fortunate enough to get these cool products in every week for review. On Friday nights if no one had claimed a product I would take it home to try it out on the kids. One Friday there was a Lego Mindstorms robotics kit, which hadn’t yet been released, and a radio-controlled airplane. I thought this would be awesome. On Saturday we’ll build a robot, on Sunday we’ll fly a plane. On Saturday we built the robot, and discovered that Hollywood has kind of ruined robotics. We built it, and then it slowly rolled toward the wall and bounced off. The kids were like, “You’ve got to be kidding! We’ve seen Transformers. Where are the freakin’ lasers?” On Sunday we took the plane to the field and I crashed it into a tree. The kids thought this was totally predictable, that Dad’s science projects had once again failed. And I was just thinking, “How could that have gone better?”

A man named Neil Parfitt is standing in a field on a cattle ranch outside Warwick, Australia. A white vehicle appears above the trees, a tiny plane a bit bigger than a seagull. It glides towards Parfitt, pitches upwards to a vertical position, and hovers near him, a couple hundred feet in the air. From its belly, a package comes tumbling downward, connected by a thin line to the vehicle itself. Right before the delivery hits the ground, it slows, hitting the earth with atap. The delivery slows, almost imperceptibly, just before it hits the ground, hardly kicking up any dust. A small rectangular module on the end of the line detaches the payload, and ascends back up the vehicle, locking into place beneath the nose. As the wing returns to flying posture and zips back to its launch point half a mile away, Parfitt walks over to the package, opens it up, and extracts some treats for his dogs.

Drones have been buzzing in the news lately. Everyone has heard about Amazon’s plans for a drone delivery program, but the American public still has some reservations about the technology. When most people think of drones, they think of the U.S. military, which boasts an arsenal of 8,000 unmanned aerial vehicles. The armed forces’ largest drones, Predators and Reapers, are the size of Cessnas and F-16s, respectively, and look a little like something out of Blade Runner.

Hackers have developed a drone that can steal the contents of your smartphone -- from your location data to your Amazon password -- and they've been testing it out in the skies of London. The research will be presented next week at the Black Hat Asia cybersecurity conference in Singapore.
