The potential for the IoT is utterly endless, with the potential to save money, time and even lives. For example, the NHS could save millions by automating a few physical processes, allowing staff such as nurses to focus more on immediate patient care rather than routine check-ups. There are many parallels between what is already happening in the manufacturing sector and what is likely to happen with the IoT. For example, 3D printers are democratising the means of production, which is leading to fundamental change in manufacturing methods. We are likely to see similar developments in the IoT, with new industries emerging that will permanently alter or replace what was there before.

Think Global, Act Local: Four Ways Your Company Can Be Socially Responsible ... - Forbes | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Entrepreneurs and small businesses are the lifeblood of today’s economy. They have the power to make an impact and be nimble without all the red tape and bureaucracy that can bog down larger companies. Many of the most popular and forward-thinking companies are concerned not just with creating innovative products, but also with influencing society for the better. They focus on impacting the world in a positive way, even if it’s just on a small scale. Among the most visible leaders of this movement are Ben and Jerry’s and The Body Shop along with newer entrants like Toms and Warby Parker. In addition, the organization/certification B Corp was created, as they explain, to “provide a framework and certification for companies to benefit society as well as their shareholders.” After all, if you could promote change and function in a socially responsible way without sacrificing revenue and innovation, wouldn’t you?

On Entrepreneurs, Entredonneurs, and Benepreneurs

On Entrepreneurs, Entredonneurs, and Benepreneurs | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The etymology of words is important as it reveals unconscious understandings. Prince means the ‘the one who takes first’, enterpreneurs are ‘those who take in between’. Does the concept of ‘social enterpreneurship’ then mean: one that takes in between for the social, or ‘one that takes in between from the social’?

How can the culture sector deal with digital change? Get rid of the 'digital' - The Guardian (blog) | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The value of digital is not just as a useful set of technologies, but as a shared collaborative agenda that can shine light on other areas of mutual knowledge and learning. So consider dealing with digital change by tearing up your digital strategy. Instead use digital tactics and tools to produce fit-for-purpose content, audience-focused research and a culture of honest collaboration. Build these into your wider mission and into the core of your organisation and you will be better ready for change.

“I’m concerned over the irony of the net generation, which has spawned a number of anti-Wall-Street movements and sentiments, to see people in this generation intuitively picking up trading practices that carry on every bit of foul legacy that offline traders have practiced before the net generation. It seems the more things change, the more they stay the same.”

Nobel Laureate Stiglitz: ‘The only true and sustainable prosperity is shared prosperity’ | The Raw Story | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

“It’s been clear to me that our economy has been sick for a long time,” he began, introducing a theme he would hammer home throughout the speech. “For too long, the hardworking and rule-abiding had seen their paychecks shrink or stay the same, while the rule-breakers raked in huge profits and wealth,” he said. “It made our economy sick, and our politics sick, too.”

We are on the brink of an implosion of scale! | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

“Though the public hasn’t groked it yet, WalMart and its kindred malignant organisms have entered their own yeast-overgrowth death spiral. In a now permanently contracting economy the big box model fails spectacularly. Every element of economic reality is now poised to squash them. Diesel fuel prices are heading well north of $4 again. If they push toward $5 this year you can say goodbye to the “warehouse on wheels” distribution method. (The truckers, who are mostly independent contractors, can say hello to the re-po men come to take possession of their mortgaged rigs.) Global currency wars (competitive devaluations) are about to destroy trade relationships. Say goodbye to the 12,000 mile supply chain from Guangzhou to Hackensack. Say goodbye to the growth financing model in which it becomes necessary to open dozens of new stores every year to keep the credit revolving.

Tom Slee's critique of Peers.org as 'astroturf': on conflating the interests of sharers and sharing companies | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

How about banding together to protest when a TaskRabbit customer posts a job to do four loads of laundry and it’s actually 10 or 15 loads covered in cat diarrhea? No: if you do that, you’re fired. The company (a partner of Peers.org, natch) also takes steps to prevent its TaskRabbits from meeting because “They don’t want us unionizing”. I’m sorry, what was that about citizens banding together against companies?

Christian Siefkes on Distribution Pools

Christian Siefkes on Distribution Pools | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

As a trendwatcher with a larger overview of trends than people spending less time on this, I’m often frustrated that I see various initiatives emerging, each working independently, often re-inventing the wheel, and not coordinating on standards and interoperability. A lot of energy is wasted in re-doing things that have already been done and could be built on. An example is the various initiatives on peer to peer infrastructures, which as far as I know, are not correlating.

At the Turning Point of the Current Techno-Economic Paradigm: Commons-Based Peer Production, Desktop Manufacturing and the Role of Civil Society in the Perezian Framework | Kostakis | tripleC - Cog... | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Following the theory of techno-economic paradigm shifts (TEPS), this paper calls attention to the phenomenon of Commons-based peer production (CBPP). In the context of the current paradigm, it argues that civil society can play an important role in creating favourable conditions for a more sustainable global knowledge society. Approaching tentatively the ways in which 3D printing and other desktop manufacturing technologies can be used in CBPP, it also explores the ways in which the partnership with the state may provide a supportive innovative institutional basis for taking the maximum advantage of the emerging synergies in the vein of TEPS theory.
