The Uncertain Future of HIV Treatment After the Affordable Care Act

The Uncertain Future of HIV Treatment After the Affordable Care Act | Health, HIV & Addiction Topics in the LGBTQ+ Community | Scoop.it

With early access to antiretroviral therapy, research suggests life expectancy for people who are HIV-positive is approaching parity with people that are HIV negative. Apart from the imminent healthcare shift, barriers like geographical location, cultural stigma and lack of information are preventing people receiving the testing and treatment they need. All over the country, nonprofits and community centers exist to do HIV awareness and counseling work where federally funded campaigns fail. How to Survive a Plague: The Inside Story of How Citizens and Science Tamed AIDS, by David France

How to Survive a Plague: The Inside Story of How Citizens and Science Tamed AIDS, by David France | Health, HIV & Addiction Topics in the LGBTQ+ Community | Scoop.it

David France’s How to Survive a Plague: The Inside Story of How Citizens and Science Tamed AIDS is a complementary work of history to the 2012 documentary of the same name that documented the early years of the AIDS epidemic to the successful discovery a decade later of combination drug therapies that brought people with AIDS from the brink of death back to life.

Matt Skallerud's insight:

The main actors in France’s sweeping narrative are a group of men and women who formed the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power, or ACT-UP, devoted to demanding action from the government and pharmaceutical companies for treatment. Their initiatives were influential in saving thousands of lives by the early 1990s.

In late 2014 I received an email from one of New York City's largest sex parties for gay men. Usually, the email would have contained this: a time, an address, a dress code, the price. The party had long been condoms-only, but a new safe-sex provision had just been added: "If you do have condomless sex it is assumed that you are on PrEP/Truvada or undetectable."
